What rights do patients have?

Since 2002, there is a Belgian law defining precisely your rights as a patient. The law specifies the characteristics of the relationship between the patient and the healthcare practitioner and aims to improve healthcare quality. 

What rights do patients have?

  1. Receiving quality of service.
  2. Freedom to choose a healthcare practicioner (in some cases the law or circumstances peculiar to the healthcare can restrict that freedom of choice).
  3. Information of one's personal health condition.
  4. Consent for each intervention performed by the Healthcare practicioner, with foregoing information
  5. Carefully updated health records, including the possibility of perusal and obtaining a copy.
  6. Protection of privacy
  7. Filing a complaint with the ombudsman service.

According to the law, the patient not only has the rights but also has the responsibility to cooperating with the healthcare practitioner as well as possible.
